Had early access to both GPT-5.4 mini and nano
What feels most interesting to me is that smaller models are starting to make more sense as workers with a specific role, not just "cheaper" versions of the bigger one
If a stronger model handles planning and final judgment, while smaller faster models handle narrower tasks in parallel, the overall system can end up being more useful than one big model trying to do everything itself
That feels closer to how real work actually happens, especially in coding. Not every step needs deep reasoning. A lot of the work is codebase search, reading files, checking details, making small edits, or extracting information. Using the biggest model for every step is often just wasteful.
I think a lot of the progress from here will come less from one model getting better at everything, and more from using smaller models like this in a way that really reflects real work Show More

One Sentence Summary
OpenAI Developers share FlavioAd's perspective that smaller models like GPT-5.4 mini and nano are best utilized as specialized workers in multi-agent systems, not merely cheaper versions of larger models.
Summary
This tweet, shared by OpenAI Developers, highlights FlavioAd's insightful analysis on the optimal deployment of smaller AI models, specifically GPT-5.4 mini and nano. Having early access, FlavioAd argues that these models excel as specialized 'workers' for narrower tasks within a larger AI system, where a more powerful model handles overall planning and judgment. This approach, which mirrors real-world collaborative work, prevents the wasteful use of large, expensive models for every computational step, particularly in coding tasks like codebase search or minor edits. The core message suggests that future AI progress will increasingly stem from intelligent orchestration of specialized smaller models rather than solely from building monolithic, all-encompassing models.
