A New Choice in Open Source Licenses: An Analysis of the O’Saasy License

O’Saasy License osaasy.dev
Show More

One Sentence Summary
Introducing the O’Saasy License from 37signals, which allows for the free use of open-source code while restricting the creation of directly competing SaaS services.
Summary
In light of recent discussions in the open-source community regarding licensing, the author recommends the O’Saasy License from 37signals. While maintaining open-source transparency, this license adds a core restriction: it prohibits packaging the code as a managed or cloud service to compete directly with the original author. This provides a balanced alternative for SaaS developers, protecting their commercial interests while still contributing to the open-source ecosystem, and avoiding the risk of big companies or competitors simply free-riding on code under MIT/Apache licenses to profit.
