电影《长安的荔枝》上映时，央视新闻专访了大鹏。大鹏曾在采访里分享过一个早年的故事：初来北京在门户网站工作的那几年，他租的房子总是离公司很近，为的是在晚上有突发新闻时，可以第一个赶到公司，比别人多一个机会。
多年后他接拍电影《长安的荔枝》，也有一个类似的故事。2023年8月的一天，他从制片人那里第一次听到《长安的荔枝》的故事，一下就被吸引了，第二天就约了制片人见面，他说自己当时有一种赶紧的心态，“我怕我要不赶紧，别人就赶紧了。”
大鹏觉得要赶紧，因为故事好、人物好、节奏好，“一下就看进去了。”这是一个电影创作者的敏感。但除了专业的判断，更打动他的，是主人公李善德身上的“普通感”，他觉得生活里时时刻刻都能遇到李善德这样的人，包括自己身上也有同样的气息，“（这些人）非常普通，默默无闻，但我们总是觉得自己可以做到一些什么，改变一些什么。”
大鹏会被这样的人物和故事吸引，几乎是一种必然。纵观他过去的电影，主人公多是些和李善德类似的、想要逆风翻盘的小人物，而且常常为某个不可能的任务死磕到底。

而大鹏为音乐梦想初来北京时，比此时的李善德还要小两岁，那时候的他，亦是诸多漂在北京的“浮萍”之一。
从东北小城到国都北京，从网站编辑到有所成就的演员和导演，陡峭的人生轨迹常常让大鹏觉得幸运。
这样的经历，让他一方面特别相信奇迹，相信人的意志可以超越各种不可能，另一方面也让他始终有某种“不配得感”，他在乎他人的评价，对赞美和认同总是很克制，对快乐也十分警惕。
大鹏表示，很多年前，他第一次报道电影节红毯，因为没有概念，穿的衣服过于随便，差点被工作人员请走，最后是和同事换了衣服才得以继续采访。
“我 是从非常基础的幕后工作走到台前的，所以很珍惜现在的机会。我时时刻刻都想提醒自己出发的时候是什么样的，时时刻刻要对赞美和认同保持警惕，要让自己始终有学习的心态，对（电影）这个事充满敬畏，这样也许会走得更长远一些。”

对大鹏来说，他曾在电影这条路上一步步往前磕，那些遇过的难关，如今他选择带过，“挫折、失败、不甘心有很多，但那些不被呈现出来 的，也就不需要注意它。”
他更希望的是，观众在看到他的新电影时会说，嗯，大鹏又进步了。
